What was that?

Jim has started a new job, so he's been in Atlanta for training the last 4 weeks. This was his last week, and he should be home any minute. We are really ready for him to live with us again!

So, last night, once the sun went down, I made sure that my doors were locked and that all the blinds were closed. I like to have the dogs in the house with me, because they don't let anyone even look at the house without barking. We live in a very safe neighborhood, but still.

This was weeknight 15 without Jim here, so Emery and I were getting used to doing things at night without him. Emery's went down at 9:00 and I then had a few hours to get some stuff done before bed. I decided to read until about 11:30 or so. Well, I hear a very loud thud about that time. Not just one thud, but about six. I knew whatever/whoever had made that noise could have easily knocked down the back door. It was loud!

Well, we all know what we do.... pull the covers up to our eyeballs and then we can hear our heart beating so fast that if someone were trying to get in, the sound of the hearbeat would give away our location.

So after I have convinced myself that this is the beginning of the end, I come up with the following options:

Run to Emery's room (then what?)
grab the unloaded rifle under our bed ( oooh scary!)
run let the dogs out of their cage
call someone, but who?
sit in bed

I did the latter. I convinced myself that maybe the thud was "someone" just stealing my car. That would be very much an inconveinence, but as long as "they" just leave us alone, take what you want. And then I thought, well maybe "they" are taking the old fishing boat parked in the driveway. Jim would be sad, but it would be okay with me!

Well after half an hour or so, I calmed down. I'd heard no footsteps, and no one entered my bedroom, so I felt that maybe I had somewhat overreacted. Emery then started crying (cutting some teeth I think) and I went and got her VERY quickly and very willingly put her in bed with me. Why is it that I think having her in bed with me will make me feel safer? I don't know, but for some reason it does. I was able to finally fall asleep around 2.

This morning, I woke before Emery and walked into the den. Guess what the thud was?

The mirror over our couch fell off the wall. (Sorry for the sideways picture) I laughed. Why is it that everything always is ten times worse/scarier at night?

So all of you who routinely sleep without your spouse (Amy Hall) pat yourselves on the back! I'm not sure I could do it!

Enjoy this beautiful weather! Emery and I are headed to the beach for a few days!

we had to go through the same thing when david started his job earlier this year. one night i called him and made him talk to me as i searched every nook and crany in the house. don't worry, you're not alone in this. it's no fun to be alone!

I completely understand!! When Brent went out of town a few weeks after we moved I heard what I thought was a knock at the door--I completely flipped out(It was about 1:00am) I called my dad and he came over--like he was superhuman and could have taken the person out--turns out our ice machine finally decided to come on and 5 pieces of ice had fallen--We still got an alarm system shortly after that b/c Brent travels quite a bit. Also, I need your e-mail address so I can add you to my list to access my blog--hope to see you Sun night at Moes!

You are so funny. I would have done the exact same thing. I would have gotten Will and put him in the bed too! I hate scary noises in the middle of the night. I had fun with y'all at Bunco the other night. I can't wait for Will to meet Emery at the pool this summer.
